  13. announced it is shipping MindShare 1.0, a new NEXTSTEP groupware
  14. application designed to meet the needs of sites that make heavy
  15. use of electronic messaging.

  17. With MindShare, Pangea has combined the ease-of-use of e-mail with
  18. the inherent power of a client-server database to create a system
  19. that not only relays messages between users but also provides a
  20. collaboration environment, an electronic forum for storing,
  21. organizing, and retrieving information. MindShare messages are kept
  22. in "discussions," data repositories shared across an entire
  23. organization. Workgroups use discussions for software development,
  24. brainstorming, project tracking, document management, group editing,
  25. publication distribution, help desks, and hundreds of other
  26. applications.

  28. By taking advantage of NEXTSTEP's Distributed Objects technology,
  29. MindShare gracefully scales up to the largest LANs without degrading
  30. in performance or reliability. MindShare also reduces administrative
  31. requirements by allowing sites to grant various maintenance tasks
  32. to users. For instance, a department head may be authorized to
  33. create new discussions, thereby enabling rapid ad hoc team building
  34. while lessening administrative overhead.

  63. MindShare 1.0 is the first program to use the Pangea Groupware
  64. Engine (PGE), an advanced groupware-oriented object database server.
  65. Like a NEXTSTEP software "kit," PGE features a set of groupware
  66. objects providing infrastructure for data formats, database
  67. replication, security, and administration. Future products from
  68. Pangea, including the MindShare Mail electronic mail program also
  69. announced today, will be based on PGE, forming a tightly integrated
  70. suite of groupware applications.

  72. Various APIs to PGE will be available in 1994. The beta release of
  73. the PGE OpenMind Utilities, an interface for UNIX utilities and
  74. other NEXTSTEP applications, was shipped January 14th. The OpenMind
  75. Development Kit, providing a direct connection to PGE servers, will
  76. be available in the second quarter of 1994. MindBridge for Notes,
  77. a bridge between Lotus Notes servers and PGE, is expected in the
  78. third quarter.

  84. Pricing is $695 per user, with no additional charge for PGE servers.

  86. $495. Volume purchase and academic discounts are available to
  87. qualified sites.
